I took my niece to see Big Brutus and she loved it. As you are driving down old back roads near West Mineral you can see this Electric Shovel looming before you. The anticipation of what we are going to see makes an 11-year old and a 50-year old Oooo and Ahhhh. What most people do not realize is that Kansas has a rich history in strip mining. Big Brutus is still the largest electric shovel in the world.
The Visitors Center has lots of exhibits about the coal mining industry. There are older shovels in the park to learn about also. An RV park is available on site which makes for a great stop on your travels. There is a small fee to see the exhibits and Big Brutus.
