The first state to secede from the Union was South Carolina on December 20, 1860. The new Confederate States demanded that all United States property be turned over to the states in which they were located. This included Fort Sumter. Lincoln refused to surrender federal installations to the Confederates. Lincoln decided to resupply the Forts in the south rather than send more men. However, on April 9th Confederate President Jefferson Davis decided to strike out at Fort Sumter and reduce it to nothing. The morning of April 12, 1861 the Confederates opened fire on fort Sumter. The rest as the say is history. With the firing on Fort Sumter the Civil War was officially started.
